| Intro | Cancer is the number one cause of death whose morbidity and mortatlity is continuously increasing in Korea. Cancer is a progressive condition that starts from its early stages and progresses to advanced cancer, then metastatic cancer, which calls for a holistic approach and requires not only awareness of the disease condition but also patient-conscious treatment and management. The Department of Clinical Oncology which was established in 2008 to treat, study, and educate Korean Medical treatment and management of advanced and metastatic cancer, strives to further advance research and apply clinical findings to systematic education. | ||
| What we do | The first records of tumor treatment in Korean Medicine can be found among the Oracle bone scripts of the Yin dynasty. In Yuan China, an independent branch called the Jinchuangzhongke was established, while in Ming and Qing periods, a department for mass and tumor was built to deal with tumor. In Korea after the time of Sejong in Joseon, doctors specializing in tumor treatment and an independent branch was established to treat and manage tumor patients. Documentation of various symptoms and complications of tumor can be found from around this time. Other literature suggests that while Western oncology focuses on the tumor itself, in other words, is a Pathogenic Qi based medicine, Korean Medical tumor treatment focuses more on the Healthy Qi. In treatment, combination of the two methods of attacking and tonifying, is applied to improve longevity and quality of life of tumor patients. 1) To educate specialists of clinical oncology and cultivate research competence for further study of oncology in Korea 2) To develop diagnostic and treatment methods through research on tumor patient treatment and management 3) To perform basic and clinical research by communicating with various fields dealing with tumor/cancer domestically and internationally |

| Prospects | To improve quality of life of advanced and metastatic cancer patients, and to increase their life span, establishing Korean Medicine as a therapeutic medicine. Through research based on physiology, pathology of the body and tumor, we hope to suggest new medical perspective on disease and human. | ||
