Internal Medicine Ⅳ (Lung System)

Department of Internal MedicineⅣ(Lung System)
Name 폐계내과학교실 肺系內科學敎室 Dept. of Lung System
Intro With the creation of a Dry-Hot environment due to environmental destruction, air pollution, individual smoking and eating habits, increase in respiratory stimulating substances following industrialization, and rapidly progressing global warming, diseases of the respiratory system and allergies are increasing. Social interest in these diseases has prompted research as well.

1) Education on clinical application of respiratory disease theory
2) Various research activities on diagnosis and clinical application of respiratory disease
3) Various research related to the diagnosis and clinical application of allergic disease
4) Various research related to the diagnosis and clinical application of immune disease
5) Research on cultivation method, food hygiene education, and joint treatment of respiratory disease, allergic disease, immune disease
What we do
1) Respiratory part : All respiratory diseases(cold, airway disease, lung disease, pleural disease, bronchitis, asthma, bronchiecstasis, emphysema, chronic obstructive lung disease, lung cancer etc), Chest pain, etc.
2) Lung related part : Qi disease, Phlegm disease, Vocal sound, Language, Perspiration
3) Allergy and Immune Disease : Asthma, Nasal inflammation, Food and skin allergy
4) Specialized Treatment part : Asthma and perspiration clinics are currently running. Consultation center for chronic coughing, seasonal flu, cold prevention and disease caused by phlegm is also open.

① Asthma Clinic
Here we research treatment and prevention for all conditions with respiratory difficulty. Treatment is generally done by evasion therapy, rest therapy and drug therapy. Acupuncture, moxibustion and aroma therapy have been effective according to the severity and deficiency/excessiveness level of disease, and individual's constitution. In terms of acupuncture therapy, research on electronic needling and herbal acupuncture is active. Recently, the effects of acupuncture on asthma treatment has been published in international journals, and its effects in post-treatment management has also been acknowledged, shedding new light on the treatment properties of Korean Medicine.
The Cheonginyukwaehwan that was developed as a supplementary drug is an example of the potential of new dosage form development research. Also, research on inhalators used in acute phases is progressing well.

② Perspiration Clinic (Hyperhidrosis Clinic)
Excessive sweating or selective sweating in certain parts of the body can create difficulties in everyday life. Treatment involves eliminating the cause and herbal therapy. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, breathing therapy, iontophoresis therapy has been showing positive results when accompanied according to the severity, level of deficiency and excessiveness of disease, Yin-Yang balance of the body, and constitution of the individual. Among acupuncture methods, research on electronic acupuncture is active, while the development of ointment called 'Jihango' for local application has enabled efficient management of hyperhidrosis.

③ Cold Prevention Clinic
We try to prevent disease through strengthening the immune system against general cold causing viruses of the common cold, seasonal flu, new flu. In addition, through understanding of Wenbing, research on infectious disease is under progress. Tailored cold treatment of individual patients through understanding of their constitution and disease pattern, speeding up the healing process of cold are being undertaken, while immunity strengthening in trans-seasonal periods along with aroma therapy, moxibustion and acupuncture therapy are practiced as well.

1) Treatment and prevention efficacy of Korean Medicine for recently increased respiratory diseases following air pollution and industrialization
2) Treatment and prevention efficacy of Korean Medicine for recently increased allergic diseases
3) Expansion of research and treatment ares for immune disorder
4) Active, sustainable research development of diagnosis, treatment and prevention on new interest areas
5) Diversity of treatment through development of various dosage forms

Specific, in-depth research on allergy, immunity, lung cancer and general respiratory disease is being actively undertaken in forms of literature research, laboratory research, and clinical trials. Especially in the fields of allergy and respiratory disease, we are playing a leading role in Korean Medicine.

1) Effects of Korean Medical Treatment on Allergic Asthma
Effects of Cheongsangbohatang variant hydrothermal water and ethanol extract on asthma related cytokine secretion
Clinical effects of AF-365 as a asthma abatement period sustaining treatment
Effects of Korean Medicine on breathing and organ tissue of allergic asthma
Effects of Korean Medicinals on cytokine in the asthma model

2) Effects of Korean Medical Treatment on Lung Tumor
Effects of Korean Medicinals on the proliferation and extinction of cancer cells in the Lungs
Effects of Korean Medicinals on the anti-carcinogenic effects and immune response of Sarcoma-180

3) Research on medicinals, acupuncture, moxibustion treatment for acute respiratory failure is actively in progress
Prospects There is growing interest in Korean Medicine through international exchange of knowledge and communication via conferences and research publications, especially in the treatment of chronic respiratory disease, allergy, and immune disease. Also, development of new treatment methods is contributing to public health both inside and outside of the country. Currently, we are working to develop medicine for COPD using herbal medicinal compositions funded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, to which additional efforts will be made to develop treatment unique to Korean Medicine for respiratory, allergic disease, COPD, new seasonal flu, etc.
